OMG! I just finished reading a new book. It’s called “The Food Industry’s Greed: How Misleading Labeling of Omega-3 Foods Undermines Health – Inflammation and Omega-6”. This book was a total “eye-opener”.
There are tons of excellent Omega-3 books that explain fats, essential fats, an Omega-3 diet book, but Lois Smithers’ new book takes on a different aspect – a penetrating look at Omega-3 products from pork to mayonnaise labeled “good sources of Omega-3” with a special emphasis on Omega-6s in those foods.
This Omega-3 expose is a thoroughly researched look into inflammation, the connection to Omega-6s in processed foods, and the food industry’s misleading labeling of Omega-3 products. By using 44 links to difficult to access on-line research, readers can follow links to new science from respected medical communities that all share a message – inflammation from these foods has been affecting the health of nation for over 50 years.
In the book, Lois Smithers relies on the scientific work of many medical communities including Dr. Joseph Hibbeln, National Institutes of Health, the world’s foremost leading Omega-3 researcher. The clear message from science is the lack of Omega-3 in western diets combined with an abundance of Omega-6s has caused an epidemic of inflammation.
Of most importance is the harm in neural development of unborn children and young children with rising statistics in ADD and astonishing numbers of juvenile diabetes. This alone, piqued my interest, being that I have a son that was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder just over a year ago. And using 44 links to research and clinical studies, she further shows how inflammation is a link to Alzheimer’s, heart disease and numerous diet-related diseases.
The Omega-3 expose also walks readers from the beginning in 2004, when the FDA issued a Health Qualifying Claim for EPA and DHA from fish to the evolution of 317 products in 2007 with unprecedented numbers expected this year and the impact upon health.
Lois also states that consumers are confused with so much information with too many believing these products contain health benefits they’ve come to associate with “Omega-3.” By using research that is not overly scientific, the she makes it abundantly clear how these foods have been falsely marketed to consumers.
There are many reviews of Omega-3 food labels in the book to help readers read between the lines of products, six clinical studies that show the power of Omega-3 (from fish) to combat inflammation and how we have reached a critical health crisis in America from inflammation.
This book is a definite must read. It is packed with information in an easy to read, simple style anyone can understand. It has been receiving praises far and wide across health communities. And be sure to check out the table of contents where she provides links to all sources and a link to sign a petition to the FDA.
As a special to me, Lois is giving the first 20 purchasers a 30 minute free consultation to answer any questions you might have about the Omegas, inflammation and research in the book.
To get a free consultation, just send your receipt to support@omega3labels.com.

Hi Ruthie!
Thank you so much for your wonderful post about my book. Nothing makes me happier than knowing this information helps someone understand Omega-3s, Omega-6s and the connection to inflammation.
DId you know that 20% of the calories Americans consume are coming from Omega-6 oils such as soybean, safflower, cottonseed, corn? These unknown and hidden oils are partly responsible for the weight battle so many face from children to adults. They are hiding deceptively in processed foods, fast foods and your favorite restaurant.
Once we know where they hide, we can become more careful in the choices we make.
Thanks again!

Hi Ruthie!
Reading this post about inflammation made me think of something I learned recently… “Inflammation has long been associated with the development of cancer.” http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1994795. Scary stuff.
