Measuring Portions

One of the things that is so important when dieting, is portion control. Of course, that is one of the major things that Weight Watchers pushes. And once, when my hubby and I decided to start losing weight, we both went on an 1800 Calorie Diabetic Diet. He had just been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, and scared the bejeezes out of him. So he was determined back then, and so was I. We both ended up losing over 50 lbs, and then I got preggo with the first, so of course, all of that weight loss went down the drain.

But seriously, using portion control can make all of the difference. It can be annoying at times, but once you get the hang of it, it just becomes an everyday thing. You don’t always have to use measuring cups and spoons, Weight Watchers talks about how you can simply use every day objects to estimate what a sensible portion is, and by doing that you’ll find it a lot easier to eat only as much as you need. Here are a few examples:

  • 3 oz portion of meat = about the size of a deck of cards
  • A large bagel = about the size of a DVD
  • A cup of rice = about the size of a tennis ball
  • A potato = about the size of a light bulb

Another way to help with portion control, is to shop for pre-packaged single-servings, like frozen dinners, mini bags of pretzels or chips. Something very popular now, are the 100 Calorie Packs. I LOVE them!! I use them when I get really hungry and just need something to tide me over until my next meal. I’d be lost without them!

Back From Weight Watchers

The meeting went great last night.  I was really surprised to see so many people there!  They had it at one of the meeting rooms at our local hospital and that room was packed!  I’m so excited to get started.  And so far, am doing really great on it.  I was also surprised to see that the person holding the meeting was a man.  He had lost over 100lbs on Weight Watchers.  Very down to earth dude.

His topic of discussion was the upcoming Super Bowl, and how people usually have get-togethers revolving around this annual event that most of the time involves food.  He was making analogies between football and sticking to your diet.  It was pretty cool and very interesting.  He also went through his daily food intake, and I couldn’t believe how much food he ate in one day.  It was funny because I embarrassed myself and made everyone laugh when I blurted out, “Man, that’s a lot of freakin’ food!”  He explained he was able to do that, just by making the right food choices.  I’m just praying that I will be able to get to that point.

I decided to go ahead and purchase a 9 week package.  I just felt that it would give me more incentive to go and stick to it.  And I also picked up the Weight Watchers Deluxe Member Kit which included the following:

  • Complete Food Companion -  a great resource for finding POINTS values of over 18,000 foods.
  • Dining Out Companion – another great resource for finding POINTS values from over 133 restaurants.
  • Three Month Journal – helps you with tracking your daily food consumption.
  • Meal Survival Guide – 50 quick and easy meal ideas to make getting started easy.
  • Coupon Booklet – Savings off the most popular Weight Watchers products.
  • Shot In the Arm – Inspirational Stories from Weight Watchers experts to help you stay on track.
  • Start Getting Healthy DVD – Packed with useful cooking and activity tips to help you stay on Program and start getting healthy.
  • Organizer – to store all your Weight Watchers materials in one convenient place.

So I’m pumped!!  The only thing that kind of bothered me is, I was up 2 more lbs than I thought.  So I guess that means my scale at home is weighing me a bit less than the one they are using.  But that’s ok, I’m going to go by both of them.
